Strange day… I had pre-selected 3 concerts which were taking place on the same date: the great Dutch pianist Daniel Wayenberg at Gaveau, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra with its conductor Yuri Temirkanov at the TCE and Radu Lupu with Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris at the Philharmonie.
Daniel Wayenberg had to undergo some surgery and cancelled the concert, Radu Lupu was ill and so was Yuri Temirkanov… Wishing a prompt recovery to them all, I finally decided to attend the Russian concert, which was conducted by Vassily Sinaisky in the end.
Sinaisky played the 2 works initially selected by Temirkanov. The 1st one was Tchaikovsky Piano concerto No. 1, a very famous piece, with Boris Berezovsky as soloist. Berezovsky was impeccable in the impressive piano part. The audience was happy to get the final part of the final movement Allegro con fuoco played a 2nd time as an encore.
Sinaisky, whose conducting style is not so different from Temirkanov, lead the orchestra in an excellent version of Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, the well known “Pathétique“.
The performers played Elgar’s Nimrod from his Enigma Variations as another encore. Simply wonderful!
