Yuri Temirkanov and the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in Lyon

Fall 2016 seems to be the season of Franco-Russian concerts… This time in the Auditorium de Lyon, with the great conductor Yuri Temirkanov and his Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In a world of permanent change, it is noteworthy that Temirkanov has been the Orchestra Music Director and Chief Conductor since 1988!

The Russian ensemble opened the concert with a most remarkable Romeo and Juliet, an inspired page composed by Tchaikovsky, followed by his 2nd Piano Concerto, played with the impressive Boris Berezovsky as soloist. A rare opportunity to listen to this piece which has remained in the shadow of it predecessor and mistreated by Siloti who made significant cuts in the concerto.

The 2nd part was focusing on Maurice Ravel, with a delightful Ma Mère l’Oye, one of his most delicate masterpieces, followed by the much less delicate Valse.

In spite of his cold, the Russian conductor and his orchestra were keen on offering an encore, an excerpt of Cinderella by Prokofiev.
