Vladimir Jurowski, Piotr Anderszewski and the COE

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe with Vladimir Jurowski conducting and Piotr Anderszewski at the piano gave a splendid concert at the Cité de la Musique.

Jurowski is one of the very best young conductors worldwide, with a deep understanding of scores and a fantastic ability to energize orchestras. In the same way, Anderszewski is one of today’s very best pianists, a master in Bach, Schumann, or his fellow countryman Szymanowski (among others…).

Vladimir Jurowski and the COE gave a brilliant interpretation of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 59, nicknamed Fire. The Andante and closing Allegro were positively outstanding.

Piotr Anderszewski joined forces with the COE to play Mozart 17th Piano Concerto. The central Andante was divine and the Allegretto – Presto quite fantastic.

Piotr Anderszewski played a wonderful encore, the Sarabande from JS Bach’s 6th Partita.

Then the performers gave a superb rendition of Schubert’s 5th Symphony, a work that is inexplicably played too seldom. Poetry, joy, some darker passages though, the influence of Mozart too. The opening Allegro and closing Allegro vivace were exceptionally enjoyable.

Vladimir Jurowski and the COE gave a remarkable encore, the Sentimental Sarabande from Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony. Quite an excellent idea!
