A selection of paintings by Ibrahim Shahda, the Egyptian born painter who moved to France in the 1950s, was exhibited in Aix-en-Provence.
In contrast with the 2009 exhibition in Paris and the recent one in Marseilles, which focused on portraits and self-portraits, the works on display also included still lifes and landscapes.
There are at least two fascinating things with Shahda:
– First, he managed to combine the legacy of “old” masters and his own modern way of painting. You can see his admiration for the great Dutch and Spanish painters, the impressionists and post-impressionists, but also that his art is contemporary to Bacon or Music.
– Second, his way of painting still lifes seems to differ from the way he painted landscapes – and even more portraits! – but all works share an incredible emotional power. The sign of the true artist.
