Exhibition “Caillebotte, pintor y jardinero” Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

Having missed the exhibition “Caillebotte, peintre et jardinier” in Giverny and later become aware of its move to Madrid’s Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, I did not think twice to go on a long weekend with visit of 2 major museums, the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza, which I had visited several times but in the 1990s, on top of the exhibition.

A round trip by TGV & AVE, with the surprise to travel with the same 3 pleasant companions both times, between Paris and Barcelona, and to learn that Mr. Bouju senior could have been one of my literature teacher at the lycée Henri IV, exchanging numerous memories, and showing them the caricatures drawn by my friend Jean-Claude Terrasse there.

Exhibition L’Esprit Singulier – Collection of Auberive Abbey – at the Halle Saint Pierre

During the summer of 2016, the Halle Saint Pierre in Montmartre hosted the exhibition L’Esprit Singulier, with works from the collection of Auberive Abbey. If certain artists present in the collection were missing in Paris – like the great Egyptian born painter Ibrahim Shahda or the Spaniard Antonio Saura – visitors could see several major contemporary artists and some good surprises.

Cross-perspective exhibitions between Troyes Modern Art and Laren Singer Museums

The Troyes Museum of Modern Art in France and the Laren Singer Museum in Netherlands partnered to display their counterpart works in 2 cross-perspective exhibitions.

The French museum hosts works from the collection of patrons Pierre & Denise Lévy, which offer a rich panorama of French painting (and sculpture) from the 1850s to the 1950s.

Exhibition Shahda, at the Lazaret Ollandini in Ajaccio

The Lazaret Ollandini is a unique and major cultural center in Corsica: it hosts various activities, like concerts of all genres, lectures, art exhibitions and a permanent collection of sculptures by Marc Petit.

This summer temporary exhibition is dedicated to Ibrahim Shahda, and offers a rich panorama of his work in very pleasant surroundings.

When visiting the exhibition and the permanent collection, one can quickly make a connection between Marc Petit’s sculptures and Shahda’s portraits and self-portraits and tag them – if one likes to give tags – as expressionists. Not surprising if you think that the last important exhibition of Shahda in Paris took place in the Galerie Polad-Hardouin, which is one of the foremost expressionist gallery in the capital city.

Exhibition Chagall, between war and peace, Musée du Luxembourg

Marc Chagall, who died a few months short of his 98th birthday, lived one of the most troubles times and witnessed the horrors of the 2 World Wars.

The Luxembourg museum is hosting an exhibition of works in relation with war and peace.

The first rooms display rarely seen works when Chagall was not yet Chagall, with some very beautiful paintings and some drawings which differ in style.

Exhibition Alabaster Tears, Musée de Cluny

The Cluny Museum is showing a small but intriguing and beautifully displayed exhibition of the Mourners of the Tomb of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy.

It gives the unique opportunity to see in detail the 39 figures forming the procession of the dead prince in a scenography highlighting the dramatic intensity and the subtlety of each sculpture.

Exhibition Le Havre Modern Art circle at the Musée du Luxembourg

The Luxembourg Museum is hosting a superb exhibition of impressionists and post-impressionists painters (mainly fauves, some Nabis too), that were part of the very active circle which existed in Le Havre.

So it is no surprise to find a large selection of paintings which belong to the MuMa in Le Havre – which hosts a fantastic collection of Eugène Boudin paintings.

The surprise is elsewhere, in the presence of several excellent painters – who would deserve a personal exhibition – next to some of the most famous artists of the time.
