Helmuth Rilling conducts Bach for a Christmas concert

Last concert of the year, after having doubted I would manage to go, up to almost the last day…

Maestro Helmuth Rilling, one among the most renowned Bach specialists, was conducting 3 works of the Cantor, at 2 successive evenings in Baden-Württemberg, The 2nd evening took place at the Schönblick Christliches Gästezentrum Württemberg in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

He was conducting the Bach Ensemble Helmuth Rilling, the Purcell Choir Budapest, which had been prepared by György Vashegyi – who was playing the organ in the continuo – and soloists Julia Sophie Wagner (soprano), Ingeborg Danz (alto), Lothar Odinius (tenor), Michael Nagy (baritone).

The 1st part included Cantatas, BWV 63, “Christen, ätzet diesen Tag” and BWV 110, “Unser Mund sei voll Lachens.
Both works were remarkably performed and highly enjoyable, both in the sections with the Choir and the ones with the soloists, whether arias, duets or recitatives. A special mention for a superb performance by Michael Nagy!

After the intermission and short speeches, Maestro Rilling received a Hungarian “honor diploma” from the hands of György Vashegyi, who read the text in Hungarian and translated into German for the audience.

Then Maestro Rilling and the musicians with the addition of (mezzo-)soprano, Eszter Balogh, delivered a vibrant and joyful rendition of Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243.

The Magnificat was … magnificent indeed, and was alone worth the trip to Germany. First violin Rahel Maria Rilling warmly congratulated her father before the musicians left the stage.
